The stresses and strains of military life are such that Rabbi Chaplains are involved in a large amount of pastoral counseling. Highly trained, Chaplains work in the area of marriage and family counseling; crisis intervention and management; as advisors to commanders on issues of morale and welfare and indigenous religions; and provide support to clinicians involved in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Chaplains receive extensive training in the areas of counseling, administration, budgeting, military writing and planning and have opportunities to attend Command and General Staff School and various senior service schools such as the National Defense University. Some go on to acquire advanced degrees in Clinical Pastoral Education and similar modalities.
